Understanding the economics of Ranveer Singh-starrer 83: Reliance Entertainment suffers a loss of nearly Rs. 22 cr.

The Kabir Khan directorial 83, starring Ranveer Singh, was released in cinemas on December 24, 2021. There were a lot of expectations from the Ranveer Singh starrer and many in the industry and trade were hoping that it would emerge as one of the biggest hits of all time. However, the audiences in general were not as excited. Also, while the word of mouth was super strong in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, etc., it failed to get an encouraging response in the rest of the country. The opposition from Spider-Man: No Way Home, Pushpa, and the Omicron variant also dented the collections to an extent.

In this special report, we take a look at the collections of 83 while at the same time juxtapositioning the film’s earnings with the expenses in production to gain a better understanding of how profitable or loss-making it was for its makers. Made at a budget of Rs. 240 cr. (COP - Rs. 195 cr. P&A - Rs. 15 cr., Interest cost - Rs. 30 cr.), 83 proved to be a costly venture, more so due to the rising cost after the film was delayed for more than a year. Sadly, the not-so-good box office performance dented its financial prospects. It collected just Rs. 53.87 cr. from the domestic box office and Rs. 28.77 cr. from the box office in overseas as the distributor share. Thankfully, the revenue earned from the sale of digital, music, satellite, etc. managed to bring in some moolah to the makers. They also got a subsidy worth Rs. 30 cr. for shooting the film majorly in the United Kingdom. However, the cost of the film was so high that it failed to break even, forget making a profit.

For the main producers, Reliance Entertainment, 83 led to a loss of Rs. 22.35 cr. with a negative 9.32% rate of return on investment.
