Gangubai Kathiawadi Box Office Collections Day 1: Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi defies predictions, collects Rs. 10.50 cr on opening day
Now that’s the kind of rejuvenation that Bollywood was looking for after Sooryavanshi had emerged as a lone big success in the last two years. The only film to score the century mark (in fact it came quite close to hitting a double century too), it was surrounded by 50 odd films from all ends during the course of the pandemic which couldn’t event touch the Rs. 50 crores mark, leave aside stepping into the Rs. 100 Crore Club. Yes, 83 did that but then barely so and unfortunately flopped due to high costs.
This is the reason why the kind of start that Gangubai Kathiawadi has taken has in one quick stroke reminded industry back of the times when films used to open well on Friday. To think of it, this is not a holiday weekend, there is no big occasion in the vicinity, the film is also not for universal audience as it’s about prostitution and moreover it’s also a heroine centric film. Even pre-pandemic, such factors would have meant a restricted start for the film. Wait, there is more. Cinemas are still not allowing 100% occupancy all over and night curfews are still prevalent in many parts of the country.
This is what makes the Rs. 10.50 crores opening of the film far more important for everyone associated with the business of Bollywood. It pretty much shows that from the core potential perspective, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt movie could well have been staring at a record Rs. 15 crores start of the situation was normal as before. Pen Studios have invested heavy money on the film and while the start has been made, it would be about growth from this point on that would please them all the more.
